NARRATIVE

Write a story that begins ‘I’ll never forget the night...’

KROK 1
Jedną z najważniejszych spraw w opowiadaniu jest chronologia. Najpierw poukładaj wydarzenia według kolejności. Zrób szkic całego opowiadania. Oto przykład:

I’ll never forget the night our car broke down. We were 10 km from home and we had to walk there. It was 12.45 and it started to rain. We arrived home at 02.30. The door of our house was locked because we had left the front door key in the car. We broke a window but a policeman came and we had to explain the situation to him. We went to bed at 3 o’clock.

Kiedy układasz wydarzenia pamiętaj o czasach. W opowiadaniu zazwyczaj używamy czasów Past Simple i Past Continuous. Jeżeli coś działo się przed wydarzeniami, które opisujesz, wtedy używaj czasu Past Perfect, tzw. czasu zaprzeszłego.

KROK 2
Aby uczynić opowiadanie bardziej interesującym możesz połączyć krótkie zdania takimi zwrotami, jak; and, or, then, so, which, whose, whom, who. Oto przykłady takich zdań:

The man who found the wrecked coach first went back to the village and asked for help.
She felt very ill the next morning but she still went to work, which surprised me.
When the police arrested him he didn’t put up a struggle or make a fuss.
First they went to Madrid then they took a plane to Seville.
The last bus had gone so he had to hire a car, which was very expensive.
She was the woman who stole the car from the garage.

KROK 3

To begin with
At first tych wyrażeń używamy na wstępie, jest to oczywiście mało
Initially oryginalne rozpoczęcie
At the outset

Before this
Formerly o wydarzeniach wcześniejszych
Prior to this

Meanwhile
While kiedy dwa lub więcej wydarzeń dzieje się
Simultaneously w tym samym czasie
At about the same time
At the roughly the same time as this
While this was happening

Just then
It was now that
Next o wydarzeniach nastęoujących po sobie
After this
Afterwards
Later
Subsequently
Not longer after this

In the end
As it turned out
Finally w zakończeniu
Eventually
At last

Nasze opowiadanie w rozbudowanej wersji wygląda tak:

I’ll never forget the night our car broke down. We were on our way home after a marvellous evening out with some friends. It was well after midnight and we were still miles from home. We tried to get the engine started again, but in vain. There was no traffic on the road at all, so we couldn’t get a lift and had to walk all the way home. to make matters worse it started to rain and by the time we arrived we were wet through. But worse was yet to come! It was then that we discovered that we’d left our front door key in the car.
We had no choice but to break a window and climb in. Unfortunately, just as we were doing this, a police car stopped in the road. At first, of course, the policeman didn’t believe our story and wanted to take us to the police station, but in the end we convinced him that we were telling the truth. By the time we got to bed it was past three o’clock and we were cold, wet, miserable and absolutely exhausted.

FAIRY TALE

Once upon a time
There once lived
In days of old
In times of old
Many years ago
Long, long years ago
Legend has it that
My story starts with
The story goes that
Little did she / he know
To cut a long story short
And so they lived happily ever after
So ends the tale of

PAMIĘTAJ!
1. Zrób szkic opowiadania. Uporządkuj wydarzenia.
2. Zastanów się nad szczegółami. Kim jest boheter? Gdzie dzieje się akcja? Kiedy? Warto też zamieścić jakieś detale, ale z umiarem.
3. Uporządkuj tekst. Zaplanuj kolejne paragrafy.
5. Bardzo ważna jest korekta. Zanim do niej przystąpisz odpocznij chwilę, żeby mieć świeższe spojrzenie na tekst.

ĆWICZENIA
1. Dokończ bajkę o Czerwonym Kapturku.

On her arm she carried a basked which contained a cake her mother had baked specially. It was a lovely spring morning, the sun was shining and the birds were singing, happy that the winter was over.
Even though Little Red Riding Hood’s mother had told her to follow the path through the field, the naughty child decided to take a short cut through a wood. As she went deeper and deeper into it, the cold and darkness frightened her. She was making her way along the narrow path when she heard a noise. All of sudden a big, fierce - looking wolf jumped out from behind a bush and came towards her...
